Ali Elhamel, MD, FRCS

The Libyan medical community received with great sadness the news about the passing of Professor Ali Elhamel, MD, FRCS. He was a distinguished consultant general surgeon and the father of laparoscopic surgery in Libya. He dedicated his life to advancing medicine, education, and patient care in Libya.

Professor Elhamel received his medical degree from Bologna University in Italy and obtained further qualifications, including FRCS (England) and a Specialty Certificate in Digestive Tract Surgery and endoscopy from Rome University. He held general surgery, digestive tract surgery, and endoscopy specialist registrations with the Italian Medical Council.

His surgical practice spanned decades, during which he completed specialist training in digestive tract surgery and endoscopy at Rome University and engaged in postgraduate research at Hammersmith Hospital in London. A pioneer in laparoscopic surgery, Professor Elhamel received advanced training in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repair, and colorectal procedures. He was instrumental in introducing digestive surgery and endoscopic procedures in Libya, helping to establish a Digestive Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy Unit at Tripoli Central Hospital. He also had an extensive thyroid surgery practice with excellent results.

Beyond his clinical practice, Professor Elhamel was a dedicated teacher, researcher, and author, contributing to numerous medical journals and surgical publications. His surgical skills, passion about patient care, and professionalism have left a lasting legacy in the medical community.

He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, students, friends, and family, as well as the many patients, he touched with his expertise and compassion.

May Allah grant him forgiveness and reward his good deeds.
