I want to thank Dr. Yu-Te Lin and Dr. Cheng-Hung Lin for sharing the responsibility as guest editors for this issue of Seminars in Plastic Surgery on “Reconstructive Microsurgery at Chang Gung (Part 1): Upper and Lower Extremities” and the invited authors for sharing their experience.

Dr. Yu-Te Lin serves as the Chair, Department of Surgery, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Linkou, Taiwan. He is also the Chair of the International Master Science Program in Reconstructive Microsurgery, Chang Gung University. Dr. Lin was trained in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou. He completed the Board of General Surgery and the Board of Plastic Surgery in 1997 and 1998. He completed the Board of Hand Surgery in 1999. He started to serve in the Division of Trauma Plastic Surgery in 1998. He devoted himself to hand surgeries. Between 2001 and 2003, he obtained a Research Fellowship in the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Meanwhile, he attained a Master of Science from Mayo Graduate School. After returning, he continued services in the trauma team.

Dr. Yu-Te Lin has published more than 10 book chapters and more than 150 scientific articles. He has trained more than 60 international fellows. He focuses on hand and microsurgery. His innovation in arterialized venous flaps improved the reliability of the unphysiological flaps. His anatomy findings of the extensor mechanism and unique techniques also ameliorated the outcomes of vascularized toe proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint transfers.

Dr. Cheng-Hung Lin is Professor and Chair of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. He is a leading expert in reconstructive microsurgery with a specialized focus on upper and lower extremity reconstruction.

In addition to his work in traditional microsurgery, Dr. Lin has pioneered novel vascularized composite allotransplantation models for transplantation research and developed the award-winning “Shoelace Wound Closure Device.” He has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications and has received multiple prestigious awards for his contributions to transplantation science.

As Director of Clinical Trials for Hand and Upper Extremity Allotransplantation at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Dr. Cheng-Hung Lin led the team that performed Taiwan's first bilateral forearm transplantation in 2017, followed by the nation's first arm transplantation in 2018.

Currently serving as President of the Taiwan Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, Dr. Lin continues to lead advancements in the field through clinical excellence, scientific innovation, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, to optimize functional outcomes in extremity reconstruction.
