SURGICAL TRAINING IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES: EVALUATION OF SERVICES ACCREDITED BY THE BRAZILIAN SOCIETY OF COLOPROCTOLOGY

Introduction Surgery plays a crucial role in the treatment of patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), even with advancements in pharmacological therapies. However, the training of coloproctology residents in the surgical treatment of IBD patients remains insufficient, highlighting the need for this study.

Objective To evaluate surgical training in IBD within the services accredited by the Brazilian Society of Coloproctology (SBCP).

Methodology Final year coloproctology residents completed an electronic questionnaire sent via email. The survey included 28 closed-ended questions designed to assess the participants' knowledge and practices related to the surgical management of IBD, as well as the profile of institutions, residents, and faculty members.

Results The evaluation revealed that, despite an adequate number of coloproctology residency programs in Brazil (61 in total), the number of residents and faculty members affiliated with the SBCP as full members and the Brazilian Organization for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (GEDIIB) is very limited.

Conclusion Given the increasing incidence of IBD in Brazil and globally, the findings of this study warrant careful consideration. The results highlight deficiencies in the surgical training of medical professionals and weak ties with educational organizations specializing in IBD surgical treatment. Consequently, graduates from coloproctology residency programs in Brazil demonstrate insufficient theoretical and practical, particularly surgical, training for managing these patients.
