Trauma surgery (TS) and interventional radiology (IR) are integral in managing traumatic liver injury. Surgical exploration and primary repair of the liver is still the standard approach; however, in recent years, the role of endovascular intervention has increased in managing both blunt and penetrating trauma to the liver. Recent surgical guidelines for the management of trauma patients now emphasize nonoperative management including time metrics for angioembolization. Consequently, it is crucial for IR and TS to work in conjunction to treat patients with liver trauma, particularly in cases of severe, complex, or unusual injuries. The purpose of this article is to review the imaging findings and management protocols of blunt and penetrating trauma to the liver as performed in a single level-1 trauma center.
