The challenges of pediatric vascular tumors in the middle ear
The diagnosis and treatment of pediatric tumors of the middle ear pose a major challenge. The present case deals with a six-year-old boy who initially presented with recurrent unilateral tympanic effusions and consecutive unilateral hearing loss. A symptom complex that is very unspecific and not primarily indicative of an oncological disease. Subsequently, a facial nerve palsy, osteomyelitis, mastoiditis and sinus vein thrombosis developed. Only at a later stage MR imaging revealed cervical lymph node metastases, which led to the urgent suspicion of a malignant process. After bioptic confirmation, treatment was primarily surgical. Late confirmation of the diagnosis can potentially lead to increased perioperative complications. This case report deals with the challenges of precise and targeted diagnosis and individual factors influencing the therapeutic outcome.
