Early Feeding after Radiologically Inserted Gastrostomy (RIG) Insertion: A 5-Year Audit
Introduction: Early feeding after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement is an accepted practice in the treatment of adult patients. Early feeding is defined as initiating the first trial feed within four hours.
Method(s): A retrospective review of 122 consecutive patients between December 2017 to May 2022 was obtained. Patients who required re-insertion of RIG or had an unsuccessful attempt at RIG insertion were excluded in the analysis. All patients were initiated on early (within 4 hours) trial feeds post-RIG insertion.
Result(s): Out of all the patients, 17.2% (n = 21) developed complications following RIG insertion. One-third of these patients developed minor complications such as soft tissue infections and pain. The rest of the patients had major complications such as aspiration pneumonia and UGI bleeds.
Conclusion(s): Early feeding after RIG placement is safe and a viable alternative to delayed feeding.
