Image-Guided Lung Lesion Biopsy: Case-Based Review Based on Lessons from Quality Assurance Rounds
Introduction: Percutaneous biopsy of lung lesions is indispensable in obtaining diagnosis and directing further management. Our exhibit will discuss and illustrate indications, contraindications, valuable technical factors for a safe and successful procedure describe, illustrate, prevent and manage complications.
Method(s): Technical factors: needle types; coaxial versus bare back; appropriate patient positioning; optimal needle trajectory; dynamic and final needle manipulation; appropriate CT windows to target (lung vs. soft tissue); targeting viable sites (value of contrast enhanced ultrasound); vital anatomical landmarks; biopsy groove length considerations in challenging scenarios like underlying ankylosing spondylitis, cystic lung disease, COVID patients, etc.
Result(s): See above.
Conclusion(s): Image-guided lung biopsy is a common procedure in interventional radiology. Meticulous attention to technique, preprocedure preparation, and postprocedure care is vital for good clinical outcome.
