Prevalence of Inferior Vena Cava and Renal Vein Anomalies besides Radiologists Awareness
Introduction: Inferior vena cava (IVC) anomalies usually asymptomatic and extremely rare. Awareness is crucial for clinical and surgical procedures. It is not uncommon for these incidental findings not to be described on radiological reports, which may negatively affect patients management.
Method(s): Recording of the detected IVC and renal veins anomalies were retrospectively reviewed on picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) between March 2016 and February 2017.
Result(s): A total of 3,516 patients were retrieved, 3,061 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In addition, 293 patients had IVC anomalies; 13 cases of double IVC with only one case reported; 131 cases of retroaortic renal vein, only one case reported; 44 cases of multiple renal veins were not reported.
Conclusion(s): Radiologists should be aware of the common types of congenital vascular anomalies and understand their implications for the patient's management and the likelihood of associated morbidity.
