Introduction: IVC filters are highly prevalent implantable devices that are ideally retrieved once no longer needed. Several methods exist for successful retrieval of IVC filters depending on whether the retrieval will be routine or complicated by tilt angle, embedded tip, perforation, and prolonged dwell time.

Method(s): To review and familiarize the reader with IVC filter retrieval techniques as well as identify factors that may lead to failure of the routine snaring retrieval technique.

Result(s): Routine endovascular snare technique has a high rate of initial success in most cases. Advanced techniques such as rigid forceps, wire loop-and-snare, balloon displacement, and laser are useful in the setting of complex retrieval.

Conclusion(s): Regardless of technique, the operator should completely encase the filter within the sheath by way of equal and opposing forces to prevent caval injury.
