Complications of a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter in Critically Ill Adult Patients: A Comparison
Introduction: To determine whether the site of insertion (lower limb veins) is associated with more peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC)-related complications and complications associated with early removal from the intensive care unit.
Method(s): We screened ICU-admitted adult patients who underwent PICC insertion between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018. We evaluated and compared the PICC complication rate and indwelling-time means between upper limb and lower limb insertion sites. We used multivariable logistic regression to associate PICC access sites with complications.
Result(s): The overall complication rate was comparable between the upper limb and lower limb insertion groups. On multivariate regression, the complication rate and indwelling time in the lower limb group were not significantly different from those in the upper limb group.
Conclusion(s): Lower limb veins can be considered an alternative option for PICC insertion in ICU patients under certain conditions.
