Das Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) ist vor rund 50 Jahren erstmalig beschrieben worden [1]. Es ist und bleibt aufgrund seiner sehr hohen Inzidenz weltweit ein großes Problem in der Intensivmedizin. Grund genug, das respiratorische Versagen als Topthema für die AINS auszuwählen.
