Diabetes mellitus is a global problem of increasing magnitude. As a consequence of the disease, long-term complications such as diabetic autonomic neuropathy, which is associated with functional disorders in the urogenital tract, develop. These include, in particular, urination disorders or functional disorders of the bladder. Although urination disorders are not uncommon in diabetes cases, they become evident only at a later stage. However, urination disorders caused by diabetes could be diagnosed and treated at an early stage by a general practitioner using simple questions as part of an annual screening. In the early stages of diabetic bladder dysfunction the irritant symptoms prevail. In the later stage, after a certain temporal latency, the obstructive symptoms dominate. Therapeutic options are non-medicinal and medicinal measures.
