Dr. Vladimir Bolshinsky is a Consultant Colon and Rectal Surgeon for the Department of Surgery at Peninsula Health and Austin Health in Victoria, Australia. Additionally, he is the Co-Director of Surgical Health Specialist in Victoria. Vladimir was born in Donetsk, Ukraine and emigrated to Australia at the age of 9 years with his parents. He graduated from Monash University (Australia) with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2006 and subsequently a postgraduate diploma in Surgical Anatomy from the University of Melbourne in 2009. Vladimir became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. He has completed extensive postfellowship training in colorectal surgery, including 2 years at the Cleveland Clinic as a fellow and clinical associate, where he focused on complex and reoperative pelvic surgery.

Vladimir has had an extensive history in research, education, and academic surgery. He was awarded the prestigious Epworth Fellowship in 2016 and the Murray & Unity Pheils Colorectal Traveling Grant. He has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and has lectured on various topics of colorectal surgery. He also serves as a reviewer for several national and international peer-reviewed journals including Surgery, Colorectal Disease, and Diseases of the Colon & Rectum (DC&R). Additionally, he runs the DC&R international journal club, serving as an outstanding host and moderator in this endeavor. Despite this, he maintains a very busy clinical schedule, which is his real passion, and been awarded several excellence in teaching awards.

When not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Edwina, herself an Endocrine Surgeon, and his three wonderful children (Frederick, Adele, and Florence). He also enjoys skiing, reading literature, and building Legos. On a personal note, it has been wonderful to watch him evolve from a trainee into an emerging thought leader in colorectal surgery and fantastic technical surgeon in such a rapid time. On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery, I want to sincerely thank Dr. Bolshinsky for serving as a guest editor and for providing us with an incredible issue on an important topic of emergencies faced by a colorectal specialist.
