Um Interventionen am Gallen- oder Pankreasgang durchführen zu können, bedarf es fast immer der Eröffnung des Verschlussapparats dieser Gangsysteme im Bereich der Papille. Diesen Eingriff nennt man endoskopische Papillotomie (EPT) bzw. Sphinkterotomie, da hierbei der Sphinkterapparat der Papille durchtrennt wird.
