Abstract

The application of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) for non-surgical treatment in orthodontics remains a controversial issue due to the higher radiation dose involved with CBCT. In addition, orthodontic patients are often juveniles and thus have a much higher risk from ionizing radiation than adults. This report discusses the potential as well as the reasonability of CBCT applications for these orthodontic tasks from an imaging perspective. It also provides some background information on actual image quality, the legal context as well as on reported dose quantities for this imaging modality.
