Quality:
Molecular endoscopy is an evolving technology for evaluation of preneoplastic lesions such as Barrett’s esophagus. In this study from the USA, the authors used a multimodal endoscope with a targeted fluorescent peptide for quantitative detection of neoplasia in 50 patients with Barrett’s esophagus. Early neoplasia was identified with 76% sensitivity, 94% specificity, and a positive predictive value of 96%. The authors conclude that a multimodal endoscope seems to offer an improved method for the early detection of neoplasia in the esophagus and other epithelial-derived cancers, which are often flat in appearance, patchy in distribution, and difficult to visualize with white-light endoscopy alone.
