I want to thank Dr. Birgfeld for serving as the guest editor for this issue of Seminars in Plastic Surgery and the outstanding group of authors he has invited to contribute to this issue on “The Harborview Approach to Craniofacial Trauma.”

Craig Birgfeld, MD, is a craniofacial surgeon at Seattle Children's Hospital currently. He went to the College of William and Mary where he became the president of his fraternity and the captain of his swim team where he continues to hold a number of school records. After 2 years of research, he matriculated at the Medical College of Virginia where he met Dr. Isaac Wornom, a craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgeon. The experience of treating patients with craniofacial conditions while in the medical school led Craig to the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he learned from world experts in craniofacial surgery. This surgical training led to Seattle, where Dr. Birgfeld spent a year fellowship with Drs. Gruss and Hopper learning the techniques of craniofacial surgery. After fellowship, Dr. Birgfeld was offered a faculty position at the University of Washington and Seattle Children's Hospital.

Dr. Birgfeld's research interests include outcomes of craniofacial surgery utilizing facial computed tomography scans and three-dimensional analysis of the growing face. His clinical interests align with his research efforts and include cleft and craniofacial surgery as well as microsurgical facial reanimation surgeries for patients with facial paralysis and soft tissue augmentation for patients with hemifacial microsomia.

Through his research and clinical pursuits, his goal is to make the Craniofacial Center at Seattle Children's a world leader and to optimize the care for all children born in the Northwest with craniofacial difference who are treated in this center.
