Hintergrund

Thoracic splenosis (TS) is an ectopic splenic tissue transplantation in the thoracic cavity, and is often associated with a traumatic splenic rupture. It's commonly an incidental finding and can present with a strong suspicion of malignancy. Many patients require video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery to reach a definitive diagnosis, although modern imaging could provide a reliable diagnosis. Asymptomatic TS does not require any form of treatment, conservative or surgical. Having said that, through gold standard imaging modalities, we should be able to avoid invasive diagnostic interventions in cases with history of splenic trauma, where TS is suspected.
