Vital foreign body of the external auditory canal
We present the case of an 81-year-old, neglected patient with left-sided otalgia visting our emergency ambulance.
Otoscopically a maggot infestination of the left external auditory canal with a perforation of the tympanic membrane was observed.
After a thorough cleaning a pronounced otitis externa related to the maggot infestination was diagnosed. CT scanning showed a shadowed middle ear and mastoid cells on the left side.
Antibiotic therapy was initiated, and at the same time daily care of the auditory canal was performed, resulting in an improvement of the local findings.
A mastoidectomy was performed to exclude an affection oft he middle ear and the masoid bythe maggots. The postoperative course was without complications. The patient could be discharged in a symptom-free state with oral antibiotic administration.
