Purpose To meet the challenges of the increasing number of germline gene-panel analyses and clinical translation of the test results, we established a structured and standardized educational program (EP) for physicians of certified breast and gynecological cancer centers within a transsectoral cooperation (TC) in 2015. The EP covers curricula and practical training. Additionally, an e-learning tool with a modular setup has been developed.

Methods To date we performed 27 curricula. They covered all relevant topics from identifying persons at risk, genetic counseling, interpretation of genetic test results, risk-adjusted preventive measures and targeted therapies. 109 certified physicians from 88 centers cooperate in the TC. We evaluated their satisfaction with the curricula and the TC.

Results We inquired the structure and comprehensibility of the curricula (1.57; scale 1 to 6, analogue to German school grades), presence of all clinically relevant information (1.58), and relevance for daily clinical counseling (1.61) (n=235). Similar results arise from the survey of the AekNo.

The TC was evaluated by 37 of 79 physicians. 81 % stated a good/very good organization of the program, flow of information (86 %), clarity of genetic reports (86 %), and 100 % a very good quality of our cancer prevention and therapy concept.

Conclusions Participants stated a high/very high satisfaction with our EP and TC. It assists highly specialized clinicians in genetic counseling, clinical management of patients at high risk and in acquiring clinical data in knowledge-generating medicine.

The GC-HBOC and the German Cancer Society currently implement the e-learning tool and the EP nation-wide.
