Objective The purpose of this study is to compare the postoperative morbidity of nasopore versus vaseline ribbon gauze in patients who underwent endoscopic septoturbinoplasty. This study compares the immediate (post op day 1) and late (post op day 14) morbidity associated with both the nasal packs in Asian population

Study Design It is a prospective simple randomization study conducted for a period of one year.

Setting The study was conducted in the Department of ENT-Head and Neck Surgery, at a tertiary care medical university.

Subjects and Methods 92 adult patients who underwent endoscopic septoturbinoplasty were included in the study. Out of 92 enrolled patients, in 46 patients vaseline ribbon gauze and in another 46 patients nasopore was used post-surgery.

Results Patients with vaseline pack had more nasal obstruction, olfactory disturbance and epiphora as compared to the nasopore group. However, on late post operative follow up there was no difference in both the groups. The patients with nasopore pack had increased nasal discharge.

Conclusion In our study nasopore is better than vaseline ribbon gauze in early postoperative period with respect to nasal obstruction , olfactory disturbance (hyposmia) and epiphora. However it does not have any added advantage over vaseline ribbon gauze pack when followed up in the late post-operative period. In a developing nation the cost factor also plays an important role hence vaseline ribbon gauze is more cost effective.
