Relevance and correct performance of the intraoperative neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery
The otorhinolaryngology and head- & neck surgery asserts its claim to the domain of thyroid surgery, not least because of the anatomical location of this gland. Still a highly competitive situation is persisting between the general and head- & neck surgeons acting in this area of surgical practice. For this reason the highest qualitative demands are made on the surgical results to be fulfilled. Postoperative hypoparathyroidism and injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve are feared complications. The intraoperative neuromonitoring plays a prominent role to prevent the last mentioned nerve impairment. This publication shows the state-of-the-art procedure of both continuous and intermittent intraoperative nerve monitoring including the surgical steps of preparation. Furthermore it conveys an overview about the currently relevant guidelines.
