Ultrasound osteotomies in rhinoplasty

Introduction:

Osteotomies are basic element in rhinoplasty. Their precise execution determines to great extend the success of the surgery. After the osteotomies oedema and ecchymosis around the eyes occur and their size is dependent either on the way the osteotomies are performed or on the individual reaction of the patient. Soft tissue trauma stays in the nature of their occurrence.

Methods:

Piezosurgery was introduced for the aims of rhinoplasty in 2007. Its use in rhinoplasty is to minimize the traumatic consequences of the osteotomies.

Seventy five patients with rhinoplasty were analysed. In 25 cases piezosurgery was used in osteotomy execution. In the rest 50 patients percutaneous osteotomies were performed in 25 cases and conventional osteotomies in another 25 cases. A postoperative assessment of the traumatic changes in the three kinds of osteotomies was performed. Oedema and ecchymosis were measured and compared.

Results:

Oedema and ecchymosis were less prominent in the cases with ultrasound osteotomies, followed by the percutaneous osteotomies. Conventional osteotomies were connected with the most traumatic consequences around the eyes.

Conclusions:

Ultrasound osteotomies in rhinoplasty are associated with less traumatic surgery and better postoperative results.
