Voice disorders and dysphagia due to different manifestations of sarcoidosis
Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease of unknown cause characterised by the formation of non-caseating epitheloid granuloma. Lungs and thoracic lymphnodes are affected in 90%. The most common clinical manifestation in ENT-practice is a cervical lymphadenopathy. The prevalence of sarcoidosis in Germany is approximately 46 per 100.000 persons.
Variable manifestations of sarcoidosis may cause voice disorders and dysphagia. We report the course of three patients with voice disorders or dysphagia caused by laryngopharyngeal myositis, vocal cord paralysis due to thoracic lymphadenopathy and laryngeal granulomas.
In ENT-practice sarcoidosis may lead to functional impairment of the upper aerodigestive tract. Therefore therapy can be necessary even if there is no affection of the lungs.
