Introduction:

Surgical procedures and postoperative bleeding are associated with a significant risk in otorhinolaryngologic patients. A previous retrospective study indicated a significant association between the risk to suffer subjectively from a postoperative bleeding and postoperative pain. Aim of this prospective study was to determine frequency of bleeding and value of a standardized preoperative coagulation history.

Methods:

1486 patients were prospectively evaluated using a standardized questionnaire including items regarding pain, bleeding, duration of hospital stay and postoperative behavior. In addition, coagulation history, results of blood examination, type and extent of the surgical procedures were documented.

Results:

Overall postoperative subjective bleeding frequency (15.61%9 was related to gender (14,93 vs. 16,67%), pain (10,19 vs. 31,91%) and are of surgery (6,67 – 33,33%). No significant influence could be demonstrated for age, level of postoperative pain, preoperative blood exams and postoperative behavior.

Conclusion:

This cohort reported unexpected high frequency of postoperative subjective bleeding. The majority of incidents led not to an additional contact with medical personal. Fort future studies, subjective bleeding should be subjected to some sort of calibration.
