Introduction:

The aim of the study was to investigate the role of PET-CT in identifying the primary tumor in CUP of the head and neck

Methods:

The data were retrospectively collected from 26 patients who were diagnosed with CUP in our clinic in the period from January 2014 to October 2018. In 14 cases we performed PET-CT in advance of panendoscopy with blind biopsies and tonsillectomy.

Results:

In 9 of 26 cases a primary tumor could be identified.

A primary tumor could be identified in 50% (7 out of 14) of the cases in which patients received PET-CT. In the second group we succeeded only in 16,7% (2 out of 12).

If the PET CT showed a primary tumor we only needed to perform a targeted biopsy.

In 1 Patient we could find a primary tumor which was not shown in the PET CT.

Conclusions:

The increasing availability of PET-CT in the clinical routine leads to a significant improvement and a more targeted diagnostic approach of CUP of the head and neck.
