The combination of late presentation to the hospital by a largely indigent population as well as the fact that neurosurgical establishments are few and far between, result in a situation where, not uncommonly, the patient with a skull base neoplasm presents in an advanced state with a large tumor and serious neurological deficits. Such is our lot in Johannesburg, where the teaching hospitals of the University of the Witwatersrand are based. This presentation deals with the range of pathologies we see, as well as the sizes of these tumors, the techniques employed in their management and the complications, challenges and problems encountered along the way.
