Summary

Ethnic origin and the psychosocial challenges of migration have a relevant impact on the development of psychic illness and the treatment procedures for migrants. In clinical routine care ethnopsychiatric know-how is still inadequately considered. Migrants are confronted with complex burdening factors resulting in higher stress levels, what may serve as a risk factor in the pathogenesis of psychic illness. The assumption of elevated psychosocial stress in migrants is supported by results from clinical studies. Migrants have a higher risk of developing schizophrenia in comparison to the native population. The review reports on hypotheses how to explain the interaction of social stressors and neurobiological changes. Psychopharmacological treatment for schizophrenic patients is different depending on the ethnic and racial background.
