Summary

Background: Physicians seem to have a higher risk of mental health problems such as burnout, depression and substance abuse. However, epidemiological data in support of this is lacking in Germany. Methods: 1 800 participants of the mentioned conference received a questionnaire, sampling demographic data, work load, medical history and drug use. In addition we used the Maslach-Burnout-Inventory (MBI), the Beck-Depression-Inventory (BDI) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C). Results: The overall response rate was 52%. 11% of the subjects showed elevated levels in the subscale of “emotional exhaustion” representing mild burnout. Nearly 20% had BDI scores above 11 points, representing a mild depression. 44.6% reported having had former depression according to ICD-10 criteria. 9% were recently taking psychotropic medication. Conclusions: Compared to the general population our sample showed first of all higher rates of depression. In order to be able to generalize our findings, comparable surveys need to be further conducted, with a focus on examining physicians from other specialities and in a setting different than a conference.
