Summary

Numerous studies worldwide have shown an enhanced risk for physicians to develop a burnout in comparison to other occupational groups. Initially the symptoms of a burnout according to Maslach and Burisch are described. Further different models of the development of a burnout syndrome are explained and distinguished from related constructs. Following the up-to-date of burnout research on German physicians with special attention to psychiatrists is explained.

However, epidemiological data in support of this is lacking in Germany. Other countries offer specific therapy options to physicians, which are particular supported by the medical associations. In Germany there is almost a total failure of such options. Epidemiologic research on this topic is essential to detect an eventual demand on physician specific therapy options and install this if necessary in Germany.
