Summary

Individuals with mental illness are affected not only from symptoms and consequences of the illness, but also from stigmatization and social discrimination. Lack of knowledge, prejudices and fear often lead to social exclusion, isolation and discrimination on all levels. Worldwide exist anti-stigma programmes to reduce it by public eduacation about mental disorders, treatment options, and by personal contact. In Germany the “National programme to reduce stigma of mental disorders” has been officially founded in November 2004 in Berlin. The programme is an initiative of the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Nervous deseases (DGPPN) and the society “Open the doors” supported by the National Ministry of Health and Social Affairs under the patronage of the National Health Minister, Mrs Ulla Schmidt.
