Summary:

Objective: The objective of the study was to assess if butafosfan and cyanocobalamin result inan improvement of clinical convalescence, reduction of postoperative abomasal paralysis and positive effects on energy-, fat- and antioxidative metabolism in cows with left abomasal displacement (LDA). Material and methods: In the present study 30 cows with LDA were alternately treated with Catosal® (5 ml/100 kg body weight; 100 mg butafosfan and 50 μg cyanocobalamine per ml solution) or assigned to the untreated control group before surgical correction. Results: The application of Catosal® did not influence pulse and respiratory rate or body temperature. In contrast, the drug resulted in an increased food intake, improved rumen motility and ruminationwithin 24 hours aftersurgery compared to the untreated control group. In the same way positive effects could be found on the concentration of total bilirubin, p-hydroxybutyrate, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA)and AST-activity. However, there was no influence on abomasal emptying rate and antioxidative metabolism. Conclusion and clinical relevance: In summary, Catosal® improved clinical convalescence and stabilized energy and fat metabolism in cows after surgical correction of LDA. The use in metabolic disorders secondary to abomasal displacement can be recommended for routine treatment.
