Summary

Objective: A dark brown pigmented alpaca foal presented in the Clinic for Swine and Small Ruminants in April 2007 had attracted the attention of its owner because of its increased lying down and moderate food intake. The animal derived from a herd of six animals which were kept in open housing. The feed ration consisted of prepared concentrates for alpacas, beet pulp and hay. Material and methods: The clinical symptoms as well as the results of blood biochemistry, radiological, pathomorphological and histopathological findings and the analysis of the feed and bone mineralisation were registered. Results: Clinical examination revealed severe distortion of all limbs with the fetlocks appearing compressed. The biochemical blood examination displayed an increase in alkaline phosphatase (1065 IU/l) activity, as well as severe hypophosphataemia (0.37 mmol/l). A broadening of epiphyseal plates could be demonstrated in the radiographs of all four limbs. At post mortem examination of the deceased animal rachitic rosary was diagnosed in the area of the bone-cartilage boundary of the sternum. Histopathological examination showed defective calcification and columnar cartilage degeneration resulting in a broadening of the epiphyseal cartilage zone. The analysis of the bone mineralisation showed a normal mineralisation of the long bone. The calcium content in the analysed feed sample was moderately lowered by 4.8 g/kg dry matter and the phosphor content (3.37 g/kg) was within the reference range. Conclusion and clinical relevance: The total findings lead to the diagnosis vitamin D3 deficiency rickets due to insufficient exposition to ultraviolet (UV) light. This results in the recommendation for the practice not to plan any foaling in late autumn or winter in Europe, as well as to provide for adequate exposure to UV rays and care for a sufficient supply of vitamin D3 in the females and their foals.
