Summary

In veterinary medicine laparoscopy, which is used for diagnosis and therapy, has gained in significance in different species of animals. In sheep laparoscopy is mainly used for gynaecological reasons. Following laparoscopy in cattle, it was goal of this study to describe the method in the standing sheep and goat and to demonstrate the physiological positioning of laparoscopically visible organs. In this study laparoscopy in the left paralumbar fossa was done in 33 sheep an 12 goats. Laparoscopy from the right flank was done in 31 sheep and 16 goats, all animals of different breed and age. This minimal invasive examination method was well tolerated by all patients. Laparoscopy proofed to be a suitable method to view especially the organs, localized in the cranial part of the abdomen. However, dependent on the filling of the rumen and the intestine the endoscopic view of the pelvic organs succeeded or failed. This fact has to be valued as disadvantage of laparoscopy in the standing animal. In feasibility of natural visualization of surfaces of organs and movements, laparoscopy is superior to other imaging techniques. For the present, laparoscopy in small ruminants is only used experimentally. Nevertheless, the indication of doing biopsy under visible control may not be ignored and enlarges the diagnostic feasibilities.
