Summary

Obesity and its associated adverse health consequences represent a growing challenge to most societies. To offer new treatment options many functional foods and dietary supplements have been developed during recent years. It appears to be a practical way to consume food which can influence energy expenditure or satiety to control body weight. This paper is focussing on data from human studies regarding middle-chain fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, calcium and dairy products, epigallocatechingallat from green tea and other commercial products for supporting weight loss. Available data indicates only rather small effects of such products on body weight. Little is known about the mechanisms of such novel approaches. Due to the inconsistency of study results there is a need for more and better clinical studies.
