U.S. Distribution of Practicing Neurological Surgeons and Radiation Oncologists
Publication History
Publication Date:
02 March 2017 (online)
Purpose: To examine the distribution of radiation oncologist and neurological surgeons in 2013.
Materials and Methods: American Medical Association (AMA) data were used to identify the distribution of practicing radiation oncologists and neurological surgeons in the United States for the year 2013. For each specialty we extracted the number of radiation oncologist and neurological surgeons practicing in each state, as well as the number of women and men practicing in each specialty.
Results: For neurological surgery, the states with the least practicing surgeons were Wyoming (9), Delaware (10) and Alaska (12). The states with the least practicing radiation oncologists were Wyoming (7), Alaska (9) and Vermont (10). Texas (441), New York (462) and California (688) were the states with the greatest amount of Neurosurgeons; Florida (361), New York (402), and California (578) were the states with the most practicing radiation oncologist.
Conclusion: There is a misdistribution of radiation oncologists and neurosurgeons in the United States resulting in a dearth of practicing specialist in certain states. The factors motivating these trends should be examined with a focus on interventions that may improve the distribution.
