Evidence-based Medicine findet ihre Grenzen, wo keine oder wenige Daten im Sinne von prospektiven, randomisierten Studien vorliegen. Obwohl wir – jeder Einzelne – und die Gesellschaft immer älter werden, ist die Datenlage gerade bei Menschen jenseits des 75. oder gar des 85. Lebensjahres limitiert. Zudem ist die Übertragbarkeit früherer Studien auf die heutige Lebenssituation – gerade auch in Zeiten der Polypharmazie (der Anteil der verordneten Medikamente bei Pflegeheimbewohnern liegt > 6) – begrenzt.
