Since the beginning of history, humanity has been using plants for nutritional and curative purposes. The therapeutic use of plants plays an essential role in the health care of diverse traditional communities of the Northeast region of Brazil. This ethnomedicinal knowledge has encouraged several researches to confirm the medicinal effects [1,2]. This study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of methanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts from Ouratea blanchetiana, Sideroxylon obtusifolium and Manilka rarufula. The plant material was collected in Parque Nacional do Catimbau (Pernambuco, Brazil). The antimicrobial activity was determined by Minimum Inhibitory (MIC) and Minimum Microbicidal (MMC) concentrations against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger and Klebsiella pneumonia [3]. The results showed that all extracts from three plants are active against at least three microorganisms. In the phytochemical analysis, a large quantity of polyphenols, especially flavonoids and tannins were detected. The MIC values ranged between 0.09 and 25 mg/mL for M. luteus, which was more susceptible to M. murfula. O. blanchetiana showed antibacterial activity against S. aureus and B. subtilis with MIC between 6.25 to 12 mg/mL, and a significant action against M. luteus with MIC values of 0.39 mg/mL and 1.56 mg/mL for methanol and hydroalcohólic extracts, respectively. However, the hydroalcoholic extract did not show antifungal activity. S. obtusifolium demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus and antifungal activity against C. albicans for both extracts. This work showed O. blanchetiana, S. obtusifolium and M. rarufula as sources of antimicrobial compounds. The chemical characterization of the active substances and their pharmaceutical evaluations are essential for the application of these plant materials in the development of new antimicrobial agents.
