Automating The Fractionation Of Crude Botanical Extracts
Fractionation of crude botanical extracts can be time consuming and wasteful of solvents. Liquid/liquid fractionation with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol can use liters of each solvent. Column chromatography can also use high volumes of solvent, and take days to finish. Here we present an automated fractionation scheme for a dried, crude botanical extract by using the Reveleris® X2 flash chromatography system (Grace Inc., Columbia, MD) that can produce equivalent or superior results in 30 minutes and use a total of less than 500 mL of solvent. Results of fractionation of Swertia angustifolia (Gentianaceae) and Monarda fistulosa (Lamiaceae) will be presented.
