Abstract

Background: Regarding the limited resources in physiotherapy research evidence mapping is considered to be a suitable method to identify existing evidence and evidence gaps. A new format of evidence mapping is the Cochrane Review Map which includes exclusively quality-assured systematic reviews of the Cochrane Collaboration.

Objective: The aim of this article was to describe the Cochrane Review Maps’ methods and to distinguish it from other formats of evidence synthesis. Moreover, as an example a Cochrane Review Map for physiotherapy after stroke is illustrated.

Method: For this Cochrane Review Map the systematic literature search incorporated all the Cochrane Reviews including subjects with stroke. In addition, a physiotherapy-relevant treatment modality after stroke had to be implemented. A standardised data collection form included data concerning indication, health profession, source, primary end point, treatment comparisons and number of studies.

Results: For this Cochrane Review Map 27 Cochrane Reviews were identified. The format could be distinguished from other evidence syntheses using the criteria research question, literature search, risk of bias assessment and presentation of results.

Conclusion: The new format of Cochrane Review Map is a resource-saving method in order to identify evidence gaps. Cochrane Evidence Maps may serve as a basis for the further development of research and care in health care professions.
