Background: Prophylactic cerclages are widely used procedure although there are no defined timing of procedure to reduce the risk of premature delivery.

Materials and methods: In this retrospective study of all cerclages performed by the author at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos between 1986 and 2013 under valium, phenergan and fortwin medication were analysed looking at fetal morbidity and mortality, length of pregnancy and maternal outcome.

Results: A total of n = 92 cervical cerclages were performed between 11 and 27 weeks of pregnancy. N = 18 patients were lost to follow because of industrial strikes. Out of 74 women left 14 delivered less than 30 weeks. The rest 60 advanced more than 30 weeks of gestation with no complication. There were no adverse effect of valium, phenergan and fortwin used during this period although this was continued with betamimetics therapy.

Conclusion: Prophylactic cervical cerclage still has a place in the management of cervical incompetence.
