Natural products from terrestrial or marine organisms still constitute huge sources of biologically active metabolites for the development of drugs, cosmetics or nutraceuticals. Despite the exponential development of research on natural macromolecules (proteins, polysaccharides, nucleic acids,…), small metabolites from primary or secondary metabolisms are also expected to play an important role as one of the major sources of new active substances in the years to come. It is mainly due to their incomparable structural diversity and their ability to interact with biological systems insofar as they have passed the filter of natural selection and evolution.
