Abstract

The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide. In Germany, approximately 20% of the population is obese. Obesity is a risk factor for a number of diseases. In addition to the body mass index, abdominal obesity is often used a marker of obesity and together they usually enable a better risk assessment. The role of obesity in different neurological diseases is controversial. Currently, a possible protective effect of obesity, the so-called obesity paradox, is being discussed besides the well-known harmful effect of obesity. This review highlights the role of obesity in cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative disorders and epilepsy.
