Ein Schockpatient ist immer als Notfall einzustufen und umgehend und intensiv zu versorgen. Im terminalen Stadium kann es durch die massiven Nebenwirkungen am Kreislaufsystem und Störungen verschiedener Organe zu einem plötzlichen Versterben der betroffenen Pferde kommen. Hauptschwerpunkt der Intensivtherapie ist häufig die initiale aggressive Infusionstherapie. Abhängig von der Grunderkrankung, der Schwere des Schocks und der Schockform sind zusätzliche Begleitmaßnahmen zur Erstversorgung nötig. Eine eingehende klinische Untersuchung des Pferdes bildet dabei die Basis für alle weiteren Untersuchungen.
