Tianma (Gastrodia tuber) is a famous and precious herb, which comes from the dried rhizome of Gastrodia elata Blume. There are various commercial specifications and grades of Tianma in herb market; and gastrodin and polysaccharides are the main bioactive components in Tianma. But, the correlation between the contents of gastrodin and polysaccharides with these various Tianma samples is not known and is undertaken herein for further quality assessment. A total of 35 Tianma samples including Winter Tianma and Spring Tianma with their different grades were collected and quantified the amounts of gastrodin and polysaccharides were analyzed by HPLC and spectrophotometry, respectively. Combined with the morphological characteristic, the correlation between the various Tianma samples (24 Winter Tianma samples, 11 Spring Tianma samples with their four various grades) with the amounts of gastrodin and polysaccharides were analyzed. It is concluded that the amount of polysaccharides is related to the quality of Tianma samples, and therefore is a better marker.
