Cleft Palate and Lip Profile of a Family: Case Report

Introduction: Investigating the etiology of factors that causes the cleft palate and lip, many authors found meaningful associations between growing factors and growing factors genes, as well as its influence on the palate closing. Individuals with a family history of this malformation need orientation and planning on their reproductive life—the so-called genetic counseling.

Objectives: To describe the cleft palate and lip profile of a family.

Resumed Report: Four siblings were submitted to speech therapy attention at a cleft palate and lip ambulatory of a children’s hospital in the city of Porto Alegre/RS. Child number 1, 13 years old, male, cleft palate, and lip left incisive transforamen unilateral. Child number 2, 10 years old, female, cleft palate, and lip right incisive transforamen unilateral. Child number 3, 8 years old, male, cleft palate, and lip incisive transforamen bilateral. Child number 4, 6 months, female, cleft palate, and lip incisive transforamen bilateral. The mother and maternal grandfather both present cleft palate and lip incisive transforamen unilateral.

Conclusion: It was concluded that this family shows a malformation relapse, maintaining the classification incisive transforamen, variating, although, regarding the alterated sides. Mother tells that there was no genetic counseling, but confirms that it would have been important knowing the odds of malformation relapse.
