Language Intervention Program: Acquisition and Rehabilitation—Deaf Treatment

Introduction: The Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences School Clinic of the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás treats deaf people from childhood to adult age, users of hearing aids, and cochlear implant. Nowadays, they are treated with the Language Intervention Program: Acquisition and Rehabilitation (PILAR).

Objectives: Expose the structured program at the Speech School Clinic, whose treatment is open to the community and go along with the patients since the initial steps of the development.

Methods: The program develops with the language developments steps, so the patients, after an evaluation, are treated individually or in a group. The children in the first steps of language are treated individually, fitting in the Language First Steps Acquisition Program (PAPEL), and as they develop, they are submitted to their respective groups: DELEX (Lexical Development), PESSIN (Syntactic Organization Program), META (Metacognitive Skills) e LOVE (Oral to Written Language). The therapy uses the aurioral approach and in specific cases, the traditional therapy.

Results: The program contribution is relevant to hearing, speaking, language, and cognitive development. It is noticeable the difference between cochlear implant users, that showed some evolution, in a better rhythm that the users of hearing aids.

Conclusion: The program is relevant because a lot of teenagers are treated since childhood, what gives us a differential by following all the development of these individuals, some of them are already in college.
