Maxillary Sinus Hypoplasia: Case Report

Introduction: Maxillary sinus hypoplasia consist in maxillary sinus volume decrease, due to its walls retraction, causing eye displacement, manifested as enophthalmia, and still its real prevalence is unknown. In most of cases, it is unilateral and attack patients between third and fifth life decades, without differences between sexes. The diagnostic is confirmed by face computed tomography, which shows maxillary sinus opacification with eye floor retraction. Other founds are maxillary infundibulum occlusion, uncinate process lateral retraction, and middle turbinate lateralization.

Objectives: This study aims to report a case of hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus with complaints of nasal obstruction and pain in hemiface.

Case Report: A 32-year-old female patient (A. F. S.), complaining about nasal obstruction and pain, like pressure, in right hemiface for many years, without more complains. At rhinoscopy, septal deviation to left and right inferior turbinate hypertrophy was observed. Paranasal sinus tomography shows right maxillary sinus hypoplasia with soft tissue content occupying its interior, inferior turbinates hypertrophy, and right nasal cavity increase. septoplasty, nasal-sinus endoscopic surgery, and right maxillary antrostomy was done. The patient was involved with symptoms betterment, without intercurrences.

Conclusion: The sinus hypoplasia is a rare clinical entity that refers to spontaneous enophthalmos and hypoglobus associated with atelectasis of the maxillary sinus. The treatment is surgical and involves aeration of the involved sinus. The maxillary sinus opacification can carry to an incorrect chronic sinusitis or maxillary tumor diagnostic and, consequently, adequate treatment.
