Laryngeal Cellular Neurothekeoma: First Case Report

Introduction: Neurothekeoma is a benign neoplasm of the peripheral nervous system, usually located in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. At skin, the treatment is generally a wide local excision. We did not find any report of this tumor in the larynx in our literature review.

Objectives: To report a case of laryngeal cellular neurothekeoma, leading to subglottic obstruction.

Resumed Report: A 6-year-old female patient presented to our pediatric emergency with a 1-month history of stridor, dyspnea, and mild dysphonia. An office-based nasofibrolaryngoscopy was performed, showing a polyploid mass at the subglottis. She underwent a direct laryngoscopy, which confirmed that this lesion was located only in the subglottis, causing a partial airway obstruction. It was attached to the anterior and left lateral mucosa of the subglottis. A size 2.5 endotracheal tube was positioned. The lesion was removed with cold instruments, with mild bleeding. Anatomopathologic and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed cellular neurothekoma diagnose. She was discharged from the hospital the very next day, free of symptoms.

Conclusion: It is the first case reported of this illness occurring in the larynx. The best treatment approach and surveillance are still unknown.
