Ossifying Fibroma of Larynx

Introduction: Ossifying fibroma is part of the group of benign tumors that affects the craniofacial region, predominantly the mandibular region.

Objectives: This study aims to describe a case of ossifying fibroma in the larynx—location not found in the research literature—that had recurrence of symptoms after excision and small period of remission of the symptoms.

Resumed Report: A 52-year-old male patient with a history of progressive dysphonia and dyspnea. The videolaryngoscopy showed a progressive evolution presenting a polyp and an obstruction of up to 70% of the lumen of the glottis. So, we opted for excision of the nodule. After excision the patient showed improvement of the symptoms for a period of 3 months, but it progressed to acute worsening of symptoms and obstruction of 90% of glottis. We chose the first emergency the tracheostomy and subsequently right hemilaryngectomy with vocal reconstruction. Diagnosis is by imaging studies associated with histopathology. Although, it has a predominant benign behavior, it shows high rates of recurrence of approximately 16 to 20%.

Conclusion: Despite the fact that it is a lesion with benign behaviors, you should opt for deep surgical resection to prevent recurrences.
